What is Infertility?
One of the most basic functions of any living organism is reproduction -
in the case of humans we talk about that as conception (a complicated process)
- the ability to have children.
Conception relies on several factors:
- The production of healthy sperm from the man and healthy eggs from
the woman.
- Fallopian tubes which have no blockages to impair the passage of the
egg from the ovary to the uterus and whichallow the sperm to reach the
eggs for fertilisation.
- The ability of the sperm to fertilize the eggs - many sperm appear
normal but fail to fertilize the egg.
- The ability of the fertilized egg to implant in the endometrial
lining of the uterus.
- A healthy hormonal environment which allows the embryo to develop
through the fetal stage to full term
Any failure in these essential systems can result in
infertility.
